Julie Kellogg-Mortensen has become a fixture in Seattle-area courthouses with the many dependency cases she lends her considerable level of caring and legal expertise to.

She graduated from Alma College, a private university in Michigan, in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History in 1997. From there, she came to the Seattle University School of Law, and successfully completed her Juris Doctor in 2000.

From 2000 to 2001, Julie had the honor of clerking at the Washington State Supreme Court for Justice Susan Owens, who has trained judges from Anchorage to Albuquerque, and participated in the writing of the Northwest Tribal Judges Domestic Violence Manual. Julie gained valuable knowledge in many issues while serving this prestigious assignment.

Julie then moved on to work with local Kent attorney Ruth Warner. Ruth specialized in Family and Juvenile Law, and Julie became passionate about advocating for children and families in the State of Washington.

What is Dependency?

Anyone who has knowledge of a child being or at risk of being abused, abandoned or neglected can initiate a dependency proceeding. The allegations are investigated and a decision is made on whether to provide services to stabilize the family so the child can remain in the home or remove the child and order services for the child and family. Although the StateĀ files the majority of dependency actions, anyone can file a dependency petition.

Committed to Protecting Children and Families

Before joining up with Nicole Chafetz in 2015, Julie was a sole practitioner, working tirelessly to reunify families and protect children through the use of effective, and ethical legal principles and skills.

In 2005, Julie served with the Northwest Public Defender Association, a non-profit company that advocates for justice system reform. The Northwest PDA has earned regional and national recognition for its leadership in providing high quality public defense services.

Chafetz Brumley is thrilled to continue our collaboration with Julie. She is a part of our family, dedicated to protecting yours.
